Supervised a staff of 15 photographers and freelancers in news, sports and features. Responsibilities included editing, writing captions and uploading and storing photos in digital archive. Assigned projects and followed through to print and online publication.
I also oversaw the Pilot's contest entries in Virginia, throughout the United States and internationally. The Virginian-Pilot won the Best Usage of Photography three times in the annual POY International contest sponsored by Canon and the University of Missouri and took first place three consecutive years in the NPPA Quarterly Clip contest for Best Usage of Photography.

In my first week as the first director of photography for South Carolina's largest newspaper, Hurricane Hugo hit the Lowcountry. Our coverage won awards from the Society of Newspaper Design and NPPA Pictures of the Year; two months after the Category 3 storm devastated the area, I co-produced a commemorative coffee table book with dozens of images and short stories about the drama.

I was named Virginia Photographer of the Year within six months of joining the staff. Two years later, I was named photo editor. In 1986, I spent a week in Haiti covering a medical mission with doctors from Hampton Roads. My photographs won five individual awards in the NPPA Pictures of the Year contest.

While in Memphis, Tenn., I was named Scripps-Howard Newspaper Photographer of the Month three times. My assignments included news, features and sports. A picture story on a premature baby -- a six-week project -- won second place in the NPPA Pictures of the Year contest.

My first stop in my career covered all facets of photojournalism. In addition to shooting daily assignments for news, features and sports, I generated story ideas, produced the images in the darkroom, wrote the captions and designed pages for special layouts.
